Join Friends of EarthDance at a screening of The End of Suburbia

by Rachel on January 12, 2012

Carleton and Ellie Stock (EarthDance supporters and members of our 2011 Community Agriculture program), invite all interested parties to join them for a screening and discussion of the film The End of Suburbia.  The Reverends Carleton and Elinor Stock, recently retired co-pastors of Northminster Presbyterian Church in Dellwood aim to encourage local residents to consider how their communities could be greener and more resilient in face of challenges such as global climate uncertainty and rising oil prices.  The Stock’s are hosting the  screening to spur conversation on how to achieve these goals.

“The End of Suburbia,” they say, “is about oil depletion and the collapse of the American Dream.” The film will be viewed and discussed Tuesday, January 24, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 33 N. Clay Avenue in Ferguson, (314) 521-0138. This free event is open to the public; refreshments will be served.

The film documents serious questions about the sustainability of the surburban way of life, especially with the inevitable decline of fossil fuels in our time. Since World War II, Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too the suburban way of life has become embedded in the American consciousness. Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream. What does this mean for all of us today?

Join the Stocks to discuss these issues and make connections with neighbors who hope to build dynamic local economies and resilient communities!
